Ever wondered how you can gain more control over your AI image generation process with Midjourney? You should try the Midjourney parameters.
This is a short introduction to the Midjourney parameters that I believe are the most important for effective prompt engineering, which will provide you with better control over your AI image generation process.
What are Midjourney Parameters?
In the context of prompt engineering, a parameter is an additional piece of data attached to your Midjourney prompt using a double dash (--), followed by the specific parameter and its value.
It is important to keep in mind that the parameter goes at the end of the prompt.
Based on my experience, these are the most important Midjourney parameters:
Version parameter (--v)
Aspect parameter (--ar)
Exclusion parameter (--no)
Pattern parameter (--tile)
Let’s go through them.
1 - Version Parameter (--v)
Midjourney frequently introduces new model versions, like the recent Midjourney 5.1. The --v parameter allows you to utilize older or beta versions, promoting variety in your AI art prompts.
Example of prompt with --v parameter:
A polka-dotted unicorn playing a saxophone on a rainbow --v 5.1
2 - Aspect parameter (--ar)
The aspect ratio of your Midjourney image can be controlled with the --ar parameter. Perfect for tailoring AI art prompts to specific design needs.
Example of prompt with --ar parameter:
A vibrant forest at sunrise with playful squirrels --ar 7:4 --v 5.1
3 - Exclusion Parameter (--no)
The --no parameter helps in excluding certain elements from your Midjourney art. A powerful tool when you need to avoid specific components in your scene.
Example of prompt with --no parameter:
A tropical beach party with flamingos, pineapples, people and ukuleles --no sand --v 5.1
4 - Pattern Parameter (--tile)
Perfect for Etsy sellers, the --tile parameter prompts AI to generate images intended for seamless repeats, creating distinct patterns for your merchandise.
Example of prompt with --tile parameter:
Colorful geometric shapes with a dash of retro --tile
Remember, --tile generates a single tile. To visualize the repeating pattern, use a pattern making tool like Seamless Pattern Checker.
The power of prompt engineering lies in the correct usage of parameters. They open the door to better customization opportunities in your Midjourney journey. Experiment with these to achieve better precision in your AI image generation and take your Midjourney art to the next level.
